The Cuckoo County Fair

I like to try to make something out of even little ideas and doodles. Something like this only takes a couple of hours but it was fun and now it is out of my head so I can move on!

Salt and Pepper...DONE!!!!

Here is the "cover" for my contribution to BOO!: Spooky Tales for Kids. I will spend the next week or so on the book's layout and bio pages. The contributors did an AMAZING job. I couldn't find a book that combined my love of horror, art, and kid's stories, so I asked for one...and it is AWESOME! Stay tuned to find out where you can order a copy. It will be available this October.

For Sale Friday #5: Digital Copy of 8: A Kid's Book Anthology for $2.99!

Dani Jones, creator of My Sister the Freak , Frosty the Gourdman, and other awesome stuff, has recently launched one of the coolest shops around.  TheIllustratedSection.com is the marketplace for independent creators to sell their books, comics, and other creations as affordable digital PDF versions.

Print on demand services have made it easier than ever to self publish our books.  The downside, however, is it is still an expensive process. A digital version is much more affordable and can be read on an iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Kindle, Nook, Blackberry, or on any computer using Adobe Acrobat Reader (free).

So here's our awesome anthology for only $2.99!  8: A Kid's Anthology I recommend shopping around at TheIllustratedSection.com. There are tons of great books available (some are even FREE!)

8: A Kid's Book Anthology

Off to the printer! The kid's book anthology that I have a story in should be available by November.  It is being printed by Ka-Blam and distributed through Indy Planet .  I will post information on how YOU can get your very own copy of this SUPER HIGH QUALITY book when a definitive release date is confirmed.

I am so proud to be included in this anthology.  The artwork and storytelling is outstanding.  This book is more than just stories, though.  It is an example of  independent spirit and collaborative motivation coming together in a productive way.  We all worked very hard on this project and we have an awesome book to show for that effort.  It is my belief that the future of creative art and storytelling will be largely independent and collaborative.

If you are interested in taking that next step in your creative life, I urge you to get involved in creative communities.  Ben Powis, who's story "Hoot!"appears in the anthology, created  Illopond .  This is the forum we used to organize and communicate during the production of "8".   We have opened that project thread to the public, so you can see our process and development and hopefully join up and/or start a collaborative project of your own.  I think it would be totally awesome for the illopond to be the meeting place for dozens of independent collaborative projects every year!  (There is already talk for Anthology 2.)

I want give a HUGE "Thank you!" to Christpher Tupa for organizing this project and inviting me to take part.   I will post some more in-depth information about Christopher and the rest of the contributors in the near future.  In the meantime, check out their websites to see some of their awesome work!

A Sneak Peak

A couple months ago, I was invited to take part in a very cool story anthology for kids.  The contributors are an amazing and talented group with diverse and imaginative story-telling styles.  I've been able to watch their stories develop and the illustrations "come to life" in our creators forum.  I am truly honored to be part of the group.  We are self-publishing the book through Ka-Blam, which is a print-on-demand / distribution service.  The book will be released this fall and I will be posting a lot of cool stuff about the stories, creators, processes, and other information as the release date gets closer.

In the meantime, here is a page from my story, "A Roar and a Squeak".  I am still cleaning up and tweaking the illustration, but you can get the overall idea of what I'm trying for.

Here is the text:

There is a place that is green and sticky and wild.

It is a forgotten place where monkards swing from the branches above, and the air sizzles and pops as a crackle cat chases down a stingrat.

The forest is bursting with a whirling flurry of life.   Until...

Panda Story Time: Wallaby Story Time Part 2

I've always loved children's books and cartoons. I think my mind is subconsciously trying to balance out all the horror movies and books I like.

Reading books with my kids has had a great influence on my art style. Reading, writing, drawing, and making up stories with my daughter is pure joy. My boy is beginning to show a love for books as well. I believe that sharing simple creative moments is the key to a happy life.

Here are some of our favorite books:

from That's Good! That's Bad!
by Margery Cuyler and David Catrow
The good and bad things that happen to a boy who is carried away from the zoo by a shiny red balloon. Great illustrations with a unique animal style.

from Purplicious
by Victoria Kann and Elizabeth Kann
All the girls in Pinkalicious' class like the color black. Pinkalicious tries to hide her love for the color pink. With the help of a new girl, Pinkalicious learns to just be herself. We also like the Kann's other books, Pinkalicious and Goldalicious.

from What Pet To Get
by Emma Dodd
A boy weighs the pros and cons of having various animals as pets. This one is pretty funny and has some cool illustrations.

from Someday
by Alison Mcghee and Peter H. Reynolds.
This simple book follows the milestones of a girl's life from birth to old age. At the risk of sounding like a big softie, I admit this book has choked me up a time or two (or every time I've read it).

from Olivia Forms A Band
by Ian Falconer
And of course, we love the Olivia books. It is a fun series and Olivia is a great original character.

I spent years admiring the creators of children's books. Someday I hope to have many books of my own.
