The Real Rock

When I need a boost of positive energy, 1950's rock and roll is at the top of the list.

What's the Word?

A-well-a everybody's heard about the bird
B-b-b-bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, the bird is the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, well the bird is the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, b-bird's the word
A-well-a bird, bird, bird, well the bird is the word
A-well-a bird, bird, b-bird's the word

Uh Huh Huh

I've been called out. Yes, I forgot today is Elvis' 75th birthday. Elvis ranks very high on my list of cool people. Sorry for the oversight.

Free T-Shirts from Your Favorite Band (aka) Free T-Shirts from an OK Band (aka) Free T-shirts from a Band You've Never Heard Of

This is a t-shirt design that I made for my band's show last weekend (which was super fun!). My band unanimously vetoed it and I can't say that I blame them. I struggled with ideas and with finding time to work on them. Late on Friday I settled on this design. I think it's kind of funny and I love cartoons and monsters, both of which play a large role in my style. In my mind, there is no such thing as too cartoony or too monstrous. Reality is often dreadfully boring. That being said, my style isn't for everyone and this design is nowhere near a favorite.

FREE T-SHIRT
I made eight or nine shirts with this design in several different color combinations. If you would like one, e-mail me at denverwagner@gmail.com with your mailing address and shirt size. I will e-mail back with color options and then I will ship your shirt anywhere in the continental US. Offer stands as long as I have the shirts (even if you somehow happen upon this post in 2017).

Tribute to Beth

I'm not going to make up any excuses here. I love metal and hard rock and cartoons and comics. So of course I love KISS. We all have our dirty little ipod secrets. I'm willing to bet that I have way more than the average person, though. My ipod on shuffle will horrify 99.999% of people.

Bugs from Britain

Some of my all-time favorite music came out of England in the mid 60's. The "British Invasion" included some of the most unique and experimental tracks ever recorded, as well as some of the best tributes to American blues, country and rock and roll. Here's a partial list of English bands form the 60's done Rainbow Style:
The Hollies
Donovan
The Troggs
The Who
The Zombies
The Swinging Blue Jeans
Manfred Man
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
The Kinks
The Animals:
The Yardbirds:

The Putdowns

My good buddy and one of the few readers of this blog (Howdy, Matt!) asked me to throw together some "band photos" for a facebook page. He asked for something quick and cartoony so I tweaked some existing artwork. Over the last year, I've scanned hundreds of sketches and other pieces of artwork in various stages of development/completion into my computer. It's my own little catalog of all original clipart. It makes throwing together silly little illustrations like the ones above faster and easier than starting from scratch.

I play(ed) drums in The Putdowns (formerly Chet & the Choreboys). I feel bad that I can't devote much time to the band these days. They are really cool guys and I love the music but...I have kids. Kids are nature's time bandits and coolness suckers. I am exhausted by ten every night. My favorite shows and movies are cartoons. I know what a onesy is. I've peeled grapes. I talk in ridiculous voices so much that I'm not really sure what my real voice is. And, of course, I wouldn't trade any of it for the world.
I would like less belly and more hair, however.

Monsters and Madmen(women)

..........................................................................................

The Yellow Wallpaper (a tribute to Charlotte Perkins Gillman)

They had just moved in, About to begin
A life all their own
That little house stood, At the edge of the woods
Down Pine River Road

Now Sara was mom, And daddy was Tom
In this new little family
But baby would cry, Sara didn’t know why
She had become so unhappy

There’s something in the wallpaper
Something in the air
A yellow sickness spreading
Through the bedroom upstairs

Then Sara started to see, Things Tom couldn’t believe
Appearing behind the wall
Patterns in the paper, She traced with her finger
From the bedroom into the hall

Now baby was sleeping, As Sara was creeping
Towards that soft tiny bed
She had to save him, She picked up the blanket
And wrapped it around his head

Now Tom woke at eight, Couldn’t believe it so late
Rolled over and kissed his wife
So cold in her sleep, Tom pulled up the sheet
And that’s when he saw the knife

And as his eyes focused, Tom finally noticed…

There’s something in the wallpaper
Something in the air
A yellow sickness spreading
Through the bedroom upstairs

The Geek Show: Making Mixed Cds

Music is a huge part of my life. I've made dozens of mixed cds over the years. Actually, I started with mixed tapes and now cd's have almost been replaced by digital playlists. Pretty geeky, but I love music and it has given me another outlet to use my artwork on the cd covers. Plus a bunch of my friends did a disc club which was really fun and introduced me to a ton of great music. I should see if that's still on for this year. Here's some of my cover art:

Music is Super!

Last night was really fun. I got together with some old bandmates for a impromptu jam at a local bar. I've played with these guys in different bands over the years and they've played together in different combos. It was a great line-up and the music came together easily. Music is such a great creative outlet and a strong bond between friends. Great guys!
Here's some musical artwork I've done over the years:
